Two sticking out for 2016 QB

By Brad Bournival

MANSFIELD, Ohio -- It’s way too early to start talking commitment, but 2016 quarterback Messiah DeWeaver (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) likes what he sees in two programs.

Not coincidentally, those two programs like what they see in the 6-foot-2, 160-pound sophomore.

DeWeaver showed just how strong the Rams could be this year under his tutelage and just how far he has come after one season of varsity football in a 7-on-7 schedule that included the likes of Akron Buchtel and Cleveland Glenville.

“I’m just trying to go against the best in the state and challenge myself,” DeWeaver said. “I’d give myself a B-plus. I have to get my team up-tempo.”

Speaking of up-tempo, DeWeaver has already taken off in the recruiting world, but two are sticking out just a bit more, as Michigan and Louisville have shown major interest.

DeWeaver has camped with the Wolverines before and will be in Ann Arbor for the BBQ at the Big House on July 27. He’ll visit the Cardinals that week, too.

“Louisville is very interested in me,” DeWeaver said. “Michigan is very interested in me. Those are the two right now in the recruiting process. I’m open to everybody.”

He hinted that he really likes Michigan and is a very big fan of offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Al Borges.

“I like their pro-style offense,” DeWeaver said. “I like the way Coach Borges coaches. I like the facilities and the campus life.”

As for Louisville, the Cardinals’ history of strong quarterbacks intrigues him.

“They’ve shown a lot of interest and Teddy Bridgewater is going to be in the top five of the NFL Draft,” DeWeaver said. “They have that pro-style offense. That fits me well.”

As a freshman, DeWeaver was 59-of-124 for 831 yards and 13 touchdowns in a run-heavy offense.

He also has interest from Alabama, Duke, Kentucky, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Stanford and Tennessee.

DeWeaver will also camp for Kentucky on Friday.
