There were only two places for Marcus Oliver (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) since the beginning of his recruitment last winter. He was either going to Cincinnati or Indiana.
Although tempting for the Cincinnati-area inside linebacker to go with the nearby program, he couldn’t turn down the Hoosiers.
“As bad as I wanted to be the hometown hero,” Oliver said, “Indiana was the school for me.”
Oliver knew he was going to commit Thursday and planned to call the coaches to let them know during the day. Then Hoosiers assistant Greg Frey came through the school, so Oliver figured it’d be better to tell him in person.
The first visit to Indiana came last winter for Oliver, who immediately fell in love with the program. Once they finally offered last month, after the Hoosiers caught wind that he was going to commit to Miami (Ohio), the Hoosiers jumped right back to the top of his list.
“The campus alone is up there, and the best campus I’ve seen. I really love all the coaches. They want to win, but they care about people, too, and they’re turning the program around,” Oliver said. “Last season they were only a couple of players away from being great.”
An official visit was scheduled for this coming weekend, but Oliver said he will visit another weekend.
Cincinnati was a close second for Oliver, who was told he might have to grayshirt. Oliver also had a strong relationship with Butch Jones, and Oliver was concerned Jones would not be there much longer.
