Ralph Smith (Avon, Ohio/Avon) was on his way to grabbing a late lunch when he got the phone call he has waited for since the end of his junior season.
Akron offered a scholarship.
“They contacted my coach with a phone call and he told me the good news,” Smith said. “He caught me off guard. I was going to Chipotle when I got the call.”
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound cornerback has not had a chance to talk with the Akron coaches since the offer and had little contact with them before this afternoon.
It’s as much of a relief as it is exciting for Smith to get offer No. 1 out of the way.
“I’ve always wanted to play college football,” he said. “Once you get that first offer you’re pretty set on going to college and being able to play. It’s a great feeling.”
Smith has not visited Akron, but he has made trips to Bowling Green and Cincinnati over the last few months.
“[Bowling Green] was nice,” he said. “I got to meet the coaches, watch how they run practice. It was good.
“… [Cincinnati] is nice, nice new facilities. It’s beautiful down there. I got to meet the coaches and just take a look around."
Smith's teammate and cornerback partner Ross Douglas is committed to Penn State.
