Colin McGovern (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) called it a no-brainer. Not his decision to commit to Notre Dame, but his decision to commit to play in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Game.
“I got the invitation [Tuesday],” the 6-foot-6, 290-pound offensive tackle said. “This one’s definitely the big one that most people talk about, so it was kind of a no-brainer.”
McGovern, ranked No. 91 in the ESPN 150, knows he will see the best players in the country that week in Orlando and get coaching from some former NFL players.
“It’s just going to be cool to get coached up by some of the ex-NFL coaches, going up against competition that’s a little better than the other high school competition I’m seeing now,” McGovern said. “It’s going to be eye-opening to the college experience.”
With some of the country’s top prospects scheduled to attend, McGovern said he will try to do some recruiting for the Fighting Irish along with fellow commit and ESPN 150 lineman Hunter Bivin (Owensboro, Ky./Apollo).
“It wouldn’t be a bad idea to talk with a few recruits and sway their interest,” he said.
It also will give a chance for Bivin and McGovern to get a feel for each other before arriving in South Bend. No position needs more cohesion than the offensive line, and a week in Orlando will help them get a head start on the jelling process.
“That would be great,” McGovern said. “I haven’t even thought about it but now that you mention it would definitely be cool to see the kind of player he is on the field.”
