Illinois back chooses to stay in state

4/12/2012

Illinois has produced its fair share of quality running backs over the last several years, and Kendrick Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) believes he can be the next. Foster committed to the Illini on Thursday.

“They have a good tradition for running backs there, and I talked to my parents and prayed about it and it’s the best fit for my running style,” Foster said.

At 5-foot-7 and 182 pounds, Foster compares himself to the NFL’s Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice.

“I can make people miss, run you over and I’m already low to the ground so it’s tough to tackle me,” he said.

Foster checked out a practice at Illinois last week and said the positive vibe at practice is what impressed him the most. The intensity and camaraderie between the coaches and players also caught his attention.

Receivers coach Billy Gonzales recruited Foster, and Foster raved about Gonzales and the entire coaching staff.

“He’s a great person. He loves the kids and we have a great relationship. He cares about your education abd being a great person on and off the field,” said Foster, who will major in business. “Coach [Luke] Butkus is hilarious and I love him, and coach [Tim] Beckman is a straight up person, and I’m glad he’s part of the program.”

Foster is the Fighting Illini’s third commit in the 2013 class.
