Out-of-state OT commits to Fighting Illini

3/15/2012

Clarkston (Mich.) offensive tackle Jesse Chadwell picked up his first BCS offer Saturday when he visited Illinois for its junior day. By Thursday, Chadwell was the Fighting Illini’s second verbal commitment of the 2013 class.

“When I was coming home from the junior day I had a chance to have some quiet time and think about what I want in a team,” Chadwell said. “To be honest, Illinois had every single one of those things.

“Illinois was my first Big Ten offer. That meant a lot. They’re the first team that really wanted me.”

While visiting Champaign, Ill., for the first time Saturday, Chadwell had a chance to watch the Illini run spring practice drills. Chadwell came away impressed by how the Illini ran practice, specifically his future position coach, Luke Butkus.

“Coach Butkus was getting right down and dirty with the linemen, doing the drills with them,” Chadwell said. “He teaches us by showing and not telling.”

Butkus was instrumental in Chadwell’s recruitment, even though the interest from Illinois began picking up only recently. Chadwell spoke with Butkus last week about a potential offer before it came on Saturday.

“I have a good relationship with coach Butkus. He’s the kind of guy I want to play for in college,” Chadwell said.

At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Chadwell is hoping to get to at least 260 by the time his senior season starts and 270 when he makes it to Illinois in 2013.

Chadwell joins Dillan Cazley as the Illini’s 2013 commits.
