RB Igwebuike discusses Illinois offer

2/23/2012

Pickerington (Ohio) North running back Godwin Igwebuike could not play football his sophomore season because of Ohio’s transfer rules. However, college programs only needed highlights from his junior season to decide he was worthy of a scholarship.

Illinois became team No. 12 to offer Igwebuike, who picked up the offer Wednesday evening.

“I’ve been talking to them for a while. [Recruiting coordinator] Alex Golesh was recruiting me when he was at Toledo, keeping an eye on me,” Igwebuike said. “Then he went to Illinois and he finally got to show coach [Tim] Beckman my film, and he liked it, too, and extended an offer to me.

“I was excited. They’re a pretty good program, one of the best in the Big Ten. I’m excited to learn a lot more about them and get on campus the next few weeks.”

Igwebuike also has offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern and a number of MAC schools. As a junior, he ran for more than 1,000 yards with an average of nine yards per carry and totaled 14 touchdowns.

He made it to Cincinnati and Ohio State for junior days recently, but the Buckeyes have yet to offer the nearby talent. He plans to make more visits once his basketball season ends.

As Igwebuike continues to add offers at a fast pace, he isn’t ready to start cutting teams or name a top group.

“It’s pretty early. I haven’t made as many visits as I’d like to,” he said before adding that Cincinnati, Duke and Illinois have probably shown him the most love.
