Northwestern is McShepard's new home

12/2/2012

Since Northwestern first began showing interest in Marcus McShepard (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) last spring, the Wildcats were always the team to beat for the senior cornerback.

Now Northwestern will be his future team. As expected, McShepard committed to Northwestern while on an official visit at the school on Sunday.

“I wanted to see what kind of guys were there, wanted to know if I would fit in well, and the first night I was there I befriended all those guys in the first hour,” said McShepard, who spent most of his time with the freshmen. “They shared their experiences coming in during the summer and getting up early for practice and getting used to the system. That was one of the main things I wanted to be informed on.

“You don’t know unless you ask the players.”

McShepard picked up the offer from the Wildcats in November and quickly set up an official visit. He said last week a commitment would likely come during his visit.

Defensive backs coach Jerry Brown has known McShepard for quite some time, as McShepard is friends with Brown’s niece back in Cleveland. It was Brown’s niece who first introduced McShepard to the Wildcats staff, tipping her uncle off to the talented cornerback.

Shepard and Brown have been talking for the better part of a year, and Shepard said the two have a great relationship.

“He’s an older coach, been there 20 years, so he knows the system,” McShepard said. “He’s almost like a grandfather to me because he’s teaching me technique and getting me better but at the same time teaching me the ways of life, which I appreciate.”

McShepard added a Penn State offer last week and has a visit scheduled for next weekend. He said he will not make that visit anymore and is done with visits.

“I’m pretty sure I found my new home,” he said.
