Hope firing a 'down moment' for David Yancey

11/26/2012

Like several of Purdue's commitments, three-star athlete David Yancey (Lake Central, Ind./Lake Central) was in West Lafayette for the Boilermakers' win over rival Indiana. So he was shocked to hear the news that came Sunday.

Purdue fired coach Danny Hope despite three straight wins to get to 6-6 and a bowl game, which Yancey called "surprising."

"It was very weird because I went on a visit [Saturday] and talked to all the coaches and they were high-spirited," Yancey said Sunday night. "It's a down moment in my life."

Despite Yancey's disappointment in Hope's dismissal, he said he remains on board with the Boilermakers. He will wait to see what happens before making any decision.

Yancey has several offers but said Cincinnati, Minnesota and Wisconsin are recruiting him hardest. None of the three have offered, however.

"Even though it's unfortunate he got fired, I'm still committed to Purdue and want to see what coach they bring in," Yancey said. "... Me and my family talked about it. A lot of schools are still recruiting me but Purdue is still No. 1 on my list.

"But my family and I need to talk to see if any changes need to be made."

Yancey said his phone was ringing constantly Sunday, but he was unsure if it was media or other colleges trying to get a hold of him. He said he could take an official visit to Cincinnati sometime soon.

The new coach at Purdue could determine whether Yancey will remain with the Boilermakers. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Yancey will likely play running back in college but could also be a slot receiver. He wants to see what kind of offense the new coach will bring in and just how he will be used.

"I'll take my official visit when the new coach comes in and sit down with the running backs coach and see where everything is going to go," he said.
