Weekend Rewind: Midwest

11/5/2012

For college students, the weekend often starts on Thursday, so for the purpose of this rewind and the benefit of Notre Dame, we'll do the same. So it's been a very good weekend for Notre Dame and could get even better.

Four-star Cole Luke (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton), the No. 33 cornerback nationally, committed to the Fighting Irish on Thursday over both Oklahoma and Texas. Each year, Arizona produces a handful of top prospects, and for the second straight year the Irish have grabbed one of the state's top prospects. Last class, Scottsdale athlete Davonte Neal signed with Notre Dame.

As Notre Dame coaches got ready to go to sleep Sunday, they were given more news to assure they would rest easy. Mission Viejo (Calif.) athlete Max Redfield, No. 37 in the ESPN 150, decommitted from USC after an official visit to Notre Dame in October had him doubting his pledge to the Trojans. Although Redfield will take a few more official visits to Pac-12 programs, the Irish are the favorite.

The priority through tomorrow, though, is to solidify ESPN 150 prospect Alex Anzalone's verbal commitment to the Irish. The Wyomissing (Pa.) Area linebacker is committed to Notre Dame, but the belief is Florida is in the best position to land his signature when it counts. Anzalone is on an unofficial visit that began Saturday night following his high school playoff game.

While the relationship has soured some and speculation is rampant Anzalone will end up at Florida, where his father graduated medical school and he dreamed of always playing, it is a good sign Anzalone came back to South Bend on his own dime. He committed to Notre Dame over the Gators before, and no doubt the Irish are reminding Anzalone why he committed to Notre Dame in the first place and things have only gotten better since his July announcement.
