Toledo was always among the favorites to land Grand Blanc (Mich.) defensive end Daniel Davis. On Wednesday, the Golden Rockets finally secured his commitment.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Davis called Toledo coach Matt Campbell and gave him the news Wednesday night.
“He was ecstatic,” Davis said. “He told me I was the No. 1 guy on the defensive side of the ball [on Toledo’s board] this year, and it was huge for them.”
Davis first heard from Toledo during his sophomore season and said the Rockets were the first team to show interest in him.
He made an official visit to the Rockets the weekend of Sept. 14. He took a visit to his No. 2 school Western Michigan the following week and finally chose the Rockets over the Broncos on Wednesday.
“I love the environment, love Coach Campbell and my position coach [Eli Rasheed],” Davis said. “I love the way the program is going and I definitely want to be a part of the next four or five years.”
Rasheed, the Toledo defensive line coach, and Davis built a strong bond throughout the process. Although he was not Davis’ area recruiter, Davis spent much of his official visit hanging with Rasheed.
“He keeps it real with me, and he’s a huge with the faith and both my parents are ministers,” Davis said. “On my visit we went to Coach Rasheed’s church. He’s a great coach. I’ve seen the defensive line play. I just love everything he does.”
Davis will be back at Toledo this weekend for another visit.
The Rockets have 16 commitments in their 2013 class.
