Michigan might want to take notice. Michigan State is starting to build its own pipeline into Detroit Cass Tech.
Junior Cass Tech linebacker Deon Drake Jr. decided to commit to the Spartans on Wednesday and pulled the trigger Sunday.
“Their coaches, excellent coaches,” Drake said was the No. 1 reason he committed to Michigan State.
Drake told his father Wednesday he was going to commit to Michigan State, and the two spent the next few talking about his future. Once they both felt completely comfortable with the decision, Drake told the coaches.
“The school overall is just awesome. I have a lot of love for the coaches, and it’s great to see they took the time out to just speak with me. And Coach [Mark] Dantonio is a wonderful guy and also as a coach,” Drake said.
Doubling as a running back at Cass Tech, Drake said he fits into what the Spartans want to do defensively, which is get linebackers who can run.
“I have the size and speed and the footwork and the agility and the speed to run sideline to sideline,” Drake said. “I have great movement.”
The Drakes also like what Michigan State has to offer academically.
“I like the counselors there, they’re very hard on their players and make sure they keep their players on task if they need help,” Drake said. “They have a building there that you can have 1-on-1 tutoring, and the classes are good.”
Drake is the third commitment in the Spartans' 2014 class and joins fellow linebacker Byron Bullough.
