B1G offers for 2014 QB Clayton Thorson

9/19/2012

Several Big Ten coaches got a close look at junior quarterback Clayton Thorson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) this summer at camps. His performance put him on teams’ radars, but they still wanted to see more.

Four games was all a few Big Ten programs needed to see.

Thorson, who rotates between quarterback and receiver with a senior, sent his midseason highlight out and Illinois, Iowa and Northwestern rewarded him with a scholarship offer.

“I felt like I’ve been playing well,” Thorson said. “There is always room for improvement. Every day in practice I try to get better but overall I feel like it’s going well for me.”

The in-state Illini were the latest program to offer Thorson, extending the scholarship during a phone call Monday with quarterbacks coach Chris Beatty.

“During the summer I went to their camp and thought I threw the ball, and Illinois said they wanted to see some film,” Thorson said. “I guess they liked what they saw. … I was obviously excited to get another scholarship offer.”

The offer came two days after Thorson visited Iowa for its game Saturday. It was the second time Thorson has seen the Hawkeyes this season, having watched them in the opener at Soldier Field.

The scene at Kinnick Stadium made a much bigger impression than the game in Chicago.

“Kinnick Stadium on game day is hard to match so that was pretty cool,” he said. “Kinnick Stadium is a great atmosphere and the coaches are all great guys, easy to get along with.”

Northwestern hosted Thorson for a visit on Sept. 8 for its win against Vanderbilt.

Thorson does not have any other visits set, but he would like to visit Illinois soon and another Iowa game.

Northern Illinois is also recruiting Thorson but has not offered.
