Defensive end Mario Ojemudia of Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, Mich., was suspended by the school from the first half of his team’s playoff loss last week because of his participation in The Opening, a July football showcase event in Oregon.

Michigan High School Athletic Association rules prohibit athletes from participating in camps that involve contact or padded drills.

The MHSAA informed officials at Harrison of the violation in the days before its Division 2 district final against Brother Rice High School of Birmingham, Mich. Brother Rice won the game 30-7 on Saturday, ending the season of previously unbeaten and defending state champion Harrison. Harrison also played without its quarterback, Jake Vento.

The Opening, a five-day training and competition event organized by ESPN HS and Nike, featured 150 of the nation’s top college prospects.

“Our goal for every high school event is to provide a positive on- and off-field experience for the student-athletes,” said Glenn Rosenbloom, vice president of ESPN HS. “We do have policies in place to ensure compliance with state regulations. We will continue to work with the schools’ athletic departments and evaluate our policies as necessary.”

Ojemudia has accepted a scholarship offer to play at Michigan and is expected to sign a letter of intent on Feb. 1, 2012.
