Marcus McShepard has a 'dream school'

8/29/2012

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Six MAC programs have offered Cleveland Heights (Ohio) cornerback Marcus McShepard, but he is still waiting for his No. 1 program to extend him a scholarship.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect attended Northwestern for a camp this summer, and the Wildcats became his favorite not long after.

“That’s my dream school,” McShepard said. “The equilibrium of academics and athletics, that’s my dream school.”

At the camp, McShepard reports he ran the fastest 40-yard dash at the event, posting a 4.36-second time.

That speed was showcased in the season opener for Heights. McShepard picked off three-star Toledo St. John’s Jesuit quarterback Brogan Roback’s pass in the second quarter and returned it for a touchdown.

“I knew they like throwing hitches and slants, so I just sat on it and he threw it straight to me,” he said. “I had no choice."

A few players later, he took a kickoff all the way for his second return touchdown of the game.

“The (kickoff) return before that (touchdown) set it up. I knew if I built some momentum to one side or the other they’d fly out, so I did that and then went straight up the middle.”

Akron, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan are the MAC programs to offer McShepard. If the Northwestern offer does not come, he is leaning toward one of those schools.

“Right now I really like Toledo,” he said. “They have a lot of good things to offer.”
