Four-star Igwebuike pledges to Northwestern

8/9/2012

The most profound recruiting visits are the ones that still leave a mark a few months after taking place instead of just a few days.

The shine never wore off for Godwin Igwebuike (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) when hE visited Northwestern in the spring. On Thursday, the four-star athlete committed to the Wildcats.

“It’s the best fit for me. They have everything I wanted academically and as a program,” the 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior said. “I always wanted to play in the Big Ten, loved the campus and players and had a nice connection with the coaches. And they fit my morals and values.”

Offered as an athlete, Igwebuike could end up playing either running back or cornerback when he gets to campus.

Northwestern’s campus made a big impression on Igwebuike because of its proximity to Chicago.

Another major factor was the relationship he built with Matt MacPherson, the Wildcats’ running backs coach.

“We keep in contact once every week, talking about football of course,” he said. “He’s just a great guy, and they really like me and felt I was going to be needed and easily accepted.”

With the season less than a few weeks away, Igwebuike wanted to get a decision out of the way before the opener.

“I wanted to balance out school and football without the extra pressure of talking to coaches and the stress,” he said. “It feels great to have a big weight off my shoulders, and now I can enjoy my last year playing high school football.”

Igwebuike is ranked No. 23 in Ohio and No. 52 at his position. He comes in at No. 53 overall in the Midwest.

The Wildcats have 17 commitments in their 2013 class, and Igwebuike is the second four-star commitment. ESPN 300 quarterback Matt Alviti is the other.
