Notre Dame added another piece to its recruiting class on Tuesday, earning a verbal commitment from three-star athlete Danny Mattingly (Spokane, Wash./Mead). One of the most highly-recruited prep athletes to come out of an area that has produced plenty of top athletes, Mattingly earned offers from programs such as Baylor, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, UCLA, Utah and Washington. But the Fighting Irish always held a special place for the 6-foot-5, 225-pound two-way standout, and on an unofficial visit to Notre Dame, he made his commitment.
"He is verbally committed to Notre Dame," Mead head coach Sean Carty said shortly after speaking with Mattingly. "I think he has always wanted to [attend Notre Dame]. As a kid of Catholic faith, it's something he's been thinking about his whole life. I think that's a decision he wanted to make after seeing the place."
Mattingly registered 62 tackles, four interceptions and six touchdown receptions as a junior, and his commitment -- No. 15 for the Fighting Irish -- strengthens an already impressive class.
