One of the top linebackers from Ohio in the Class of 2013, Darrien Howard (Dayton/Chaminade Julienne) is starting to make his rounds to Midwest programs.
He has already checked out Bowling Green, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan State Ohio State and has a few more visits planned.
The Buckeyes have yet to offer but told Howard they are among their favorites at linebacker.
“They said I’m in the top 10 on their recruiting board, so they’re really looking at me,” Howard said.
The Spartans have a solid history with recruiting players from Chaminade Julienne. Former Spartans running back and current Tennessee Titans back Javon Ringer graduated from CJ.
Spartans coach Mark Dantonio is not ready to offer Howard yet, though. Howard said the staff wants to see how he performs at one of their camps first.
Following his Michigan State visit, Howard checked out Illinois and said it went “pretty great and I like the coaches there.”
His next visit will come this weekend to Pittsburgh, which is the latest team to offer. He will also go to Ohio State at the end of the month and West Virginia for its spring game.
Howard has offers from Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Toledo and West Virginia.
As a junior, Howard said he posted 154 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, two recoveries and a defensive touchdown. He also scored 15 touchdowns on offense as a fullback (13) and tight end (two).
Howard said a handful of programs could place him at fullback in college.
