Football Recruiting - Midwest Region: Ole Miss Rebels

A Friday offer validated a Thursday decision for Darius West.

The four-star cornerback out of Lima (Ohio) Central Catholic planned to commit to a school in his top four Thursday afternoon, but he delayed his decision after talking with his dad. The move paid dividends rather quickly as Notre Dame offered the No. 9 player in Ohio on Friday.

With three solid pickups in the month of May, Northwestern has been hot with its recruiting. The Wildcats are hoping to add to his class with rising cornerback Verkedric Vaughns (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet).

Hearing Vaughns tell it, however, a decision isn’t even close -- no matter how difficult it is for him to think about recruiting.

Chicago saw snow the first weekend in May, but there could be a more permanent Freeze in the Windy City coming.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze landed the nation’s top receiver and the No. 1 overall prospect out of Illinois in 2013, and the hottest name in recruiting is going back for two more from the same school in 2014.

Brandon Harris must feel like he's going through a tryout camp.

The 2014 quarterback from Bossier City, La.'s Parkway High has had coaches coming by his school all week to either watch him throw individually or to watch his team practice.

The week has worked out well for him so far. After a good workout in front of a group of teams led by Ohio State on Monday, Harris said he's been seen by Texas A&M, Tennessee, Baylor, South Florida and Louisiana Tech. Those workouts have yielded a new development in his recruiting process.

Michigan originally led for Daniel Helm (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood), but a tight end commitment for the Wolverines today filled the spot in their class.

That did not have as much of an impact on Helm as it might appear, though, as Ole Miss and Tennessee had taken over the top two spots on his list. On Tuesday evening, Helm committed to the Volunteers.

Deadlocked between Ole Miss and Tennessee, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Helm called up Vols coach Butch Jones for some clarity.

“I’ve been asking which way to go, school to choose,” Helm said, “and he basically shared his heart with me and said he’d like to coach me and said Tennessee would be a great fit for me.

“That’s what I was looking for.”

Helm visited Knoxville earlier this month, which helped spur the Volunteers toward the top of his list. At the time of the visit he had a top four of Michigan, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida, which has not offered.

More than the visit, however, it was the coaches that catapulted Tennessee. Helm gushed about the staff, specifically Jones, offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian and position coach Mark Elder.

Minster (Ohio) High School tight end Ethan Wolf also committed to Tennessee this month, and the staff told Helm they foresee a lot of two-tight end sets.

“They talked to me a lot about what they want to do and see me as,” Helm said. “I don’t know how it’ll parlay with the other tight end commit, but we’ll have a lot of healthy competition in our careers.”

A decision was not planned to come until just before the season at the earliest, but with positions filling up quickly, Helm was forced to make a commitment earlier than he planned. Still, he has no second thoughts about his pledge to Tennessee.

“I’m quite comfortable with this decision,” he said. “I don’t plan on changing unless something goes on with the coaching staff or something bad, which I don’t see happening.”
When the SEC comes calling, recruits tend to listen. It is no different with ESPN Watch List linebacker Clifton Garrett (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South).

Garrett will visit Alabama and LSU on consecutive days next weekend, checking out the Crimson Tide on Friday before going to Baton Rouge for the LSU spring game Saturday.

Daniel Helm (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood) spent his spring break in Florida. He went to all of the typical vacation spots in Orlando and the Disney theme parks. For most teenagers, especially from the Midwest, that would have been the highlight of his spring break. But for a top football prospect, it was actually a visit to a college that left the lasting impression.

Less than a month ago, Dylan Thompson (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) believed his recruitment would not go on much longer. He expected a few more offers and then a spring or early summer decision.

Now, the talented defensive lineman will delay it as long as possible.

Watch List offensive tackle Andy Bauer (St. Louis/De Smet) works hard for everything he gets, but he doesn’t ask for much in return. There are only a couple of things he wants before he graduates next year.

A state championship would be nice. All-state recognition would serve as an added bonus. A college scholarship also would be a dream come true -- even though, with a list nearing 40 offers, that dream will become a reality in time.

One thing that Bauer has wanted is an invitation to play in the Under Armour All-America Game, and on Tuesday, the 6-foot-6, 304-pound tackle had his wish granted. Bauer received the invitation and happily accepted, and he’ll be a part of the 2014 edition of the prestigious all-star game.
