Watkins staying local with junior days
By Damon Sayles
One offer away from 20 total, ESPN Watch List cornerback Nick Watkins (Dallas/Bishop Dunne) isn’t a stranger to attracting the elite programs from coast to coast.
When it comes to upcoming junior days, however, Watkins has decided to keep things local. On Saturday, he said he will take in Baylor’s junior day. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback will follow that with visits to Texas (Feb. 10) and SMU (Feb. 17).
“They’re all pretty close, and I’m looking to stay close to home,” Watkins said. “I know with SMU, it’s right downtown, just a few minutes from my house. I can drive up, see a nice campus, a great business school and a great program.”
Watkins has offers from all three schools, but he also holds offers from Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and several other programs. Of his 19 offers, seven are from the SEC.
“I’m just excited to experience all of it,” Watkins said. “It’s a blessing to have the opportunity just to play at the next level. Coaches are coming in and talking to my head coach and DBs coach every day. It’s just a blessing.”
