ESPN 300 RB makes surprise pick
By Damon Sayles
Texas State picked up a gift in the form of an ESPN 300 prospect late Sunday morning.
Four-star running back Jamel James (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) gave the Bobcats his verbal pledge following an official visit to the San Marcos, Texas, campus. Cinco Ranch coach Don Clayton confirmed the news via text Sunday afternoon.
James became not only the program’s 18th overall commitment but also the program’s top-ranked commit of the 2013 recruiting class.
A 5-foot-11, 220-pound back, James is ranked No. 232 in the ESPN 300. He’s the No. 20 running back nationally and the No. 30 player in Texas in the Class of 2013.
James originally committed to Arkansas in July 2011 but decommitted in April after the Razorbacks fired then-head coach Bobby Petrino. He committed to Notre Dame in July but eventually parted ways with the Fighting Irish.
James was one of two running backs to commit. He joined junior college back C.J. Best (Pleasant Hill, Calif./Diablo Valley College), a 5-foot-11, 185-pound back with 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash. Best is the first cousin of Detroit Lions speed back Jahvid Best.
