3-star CB Barnes a Big 12 commit again
By Damon Sayles
Three-star cornerback Jalen Barnes (Port Arthur, Texas/Memorial) is back in the Big 12.
After switching from Iowa State to Houston last week, Barnes decided Wednesday to give Texas Tech his verbal commitment. A 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback, Barnes was recruited to the Red Raiders by new safeties coach Trey Haverty.
Barnes made the switch after an official visit to Lubbock, Texas, over the weekend. He said he made the switch for multiple reasons, including low depth at the safety position, Big 12 exposure, the city and campus atmospheres and -- arguably, most importantly -- the high-energy coaching staff.
“I bonded with them like they were family, almost like I already knew them,” Barnes said of Haverty, new head coach Kliff Kingsbury and the rest of the coaching staff. “I felt a part of the family. I think their philosophy will win a few Big 12 championships.”
Barnes helped Memorial to an 8-3 record and a trip to the Texas Class 5A Division II playoffs. He recorded 54 tackles and five pass breakups, and he also had an interception.
