Decision time looming for Lowe
By Brandon Chatmon
Jaylen Lowe (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) has a big decision looming. And his decision where to play in college is directly related to where he'll line up at the next level.
As signing day looms, Lowe needs to decide on playing at Tulsa or going the junior college route at Northeastern Oklahoma Junior College in Miami, Okla. That decision is largely based on knowing he'll be locked in playing quarterback at NEO or being open to the possibility of changing positions at TU.
Lowe lined up at multiple positions in high school before starring as a quarterback as a senior. Now, he'll have to decide how important lining up under center truly is. Lowe visited Tulsa last weekend and enjoyed his official visit with the Golden Hurricane. Yet, TU orginally offered him as an athlete, although their stance changed a bit this weekend.
"When I was on the visit, they told me they'll give me every opportunity to play quarterback," Lowe said. "But if that doesn't work, we'll move you to corner, receiver or wherever we need you."
Offensive line coach Denver Johnson has been recruiting Lowe, who really enjoyed his visit to TU.
"It's really small, so everybody knows everybody," Lowe said. "I really liked it."
The Golden Hurricane's offense is tailored for quarterbacks who bring a run-pass threat to the table.
"On the visit they explained what they do, read option, spread the ball around," he said. "It's kind of like what I did at Owasso so I'd fit in well."
If he choses to go the junior college route at NEO, he'll play quarterback.
"I could come in and compete for a spot," Lowe said of the positives of NEO. "They strictly want me at quarterback. At TU, I could switch positions but I think I'm just a quarterback."
Lowe said he likely would make a decision this week with TU and NEO as his two options.
