Sooners offer committed ESPN 300 WR

By Brandon Chatmon

There could be another receiver in the competition to replace Kenny Stills at Oklahoma this spring. With Stills and Justin Brown moving on to the next level, Sooners receivers coach Jay Norvell is looking to add another receiver to his 2013 class.

Receiver Dannon Cavil (San Antonio/Madison) told he was offered by Oklahoma on Thursday. At 6-foot-5 and 203 pounds, Cavil would bring terrific size to the Sooners receiving corps as Norvell looks to replace both of his outside receivers in 2013. The California commit is ranked No. 239 on the ESPN300.

The Sooners reached out to and offered ESPN 300 receiver Dannon Cavil.
“In the past month I’ve gotten calls from Coach Norvell because of the likelihood of Kenny leaving and Brown graduating,” Cavil said. “I’m a mid-year [enrollee] and they’re looking for guys who can come in and make an impact.”

Cavil was excited about receving the offer and he considered committing but decided to take some time before making a final decision. Asked if he thought about committing on the spot, he was candid with his answer.

“I did,” Cavil said. “It’s still something to think about.”

As a mid-year enrollee, however, he can’t think very long. The clock is ticking with school beginning in a few days.

“School starts Monday,” he said when asked about a timetable for a decision. “That’s all I can really say.”

That means a decision is coming soon and the Sooners appear to be in great position.

“The Sooners have been a dream school of mine since last year,” Cavil said. “After junior day [last spring] I was OU everything, OU overload and to not be offered then was really frustrating. Heading in I was like ‘If I get offered, I’ll commit, no doubt about it.’ So I’m truly honored [to receive an offer now].”

Norvell compared Cavil to some standout Sooners outside receivers of the past.

“He said, 'We haven’t had a guy like you since Malcolm Kelly,' and I remind him of Justin Brown but faster,” Cavil said. “He said, 'We strongly believe you can come in and make an impact.' ”

A one-time commitment to Ole Miss before flipping to Cal, Cavil has offers from several schools including Cal, Ole Miss, Baylor, Clemson, Houston and others.
