WR Jeremey Chappelle signs with MSU

By Damon Sayles

Jeremey Chappelle (Tyler, Texas/Tyler Junior College) weighed his options -- and, to an extent, he let others weigh his options for him. People close to him would direct him to various schools, trying to convince him that he would be a perfect fit.

When it came down to making a final decision, Chappelle called it “a business decision.” The 6-foot-2, 212-pound receiver and mid-year juco transfer verbally committed to Mississippi State on Dec. 9, and he signed with the Bulldogs Wednesday morning.

“It feels real good; it’s a blessing,” Chappelle said. “The process got a little stressful, but it feels real good just to get back to the basics. I’m ready to put in work now.”

Chappelle, a first-team, all-Southwest Junior College Football Conference receiver, looked strongly at offers from Louisiana Tech and West Virginia. It wasn’t until his official visit to Starkville, Miss., two weekends ago that he knew he wanted to take his talents to the SEC.

“When I was there, they were telling me they needed immediate help from an experienced guy, and I could be that guy,” said Chappelle, who was recruited by Mississippi State offensive coordinator Les Koenning. “They told me I was going to get a lot of playing time, but I’ve still got to compete for the job, though.”

Chappelle is one of 21 commits for this class, and his early signing will give him a chance to learn the offense and get a jump-start on the rest of the players. As a sophomore at Tyler, he was the team’s leading receiver, recording 60 catches for 801 yards and nine touchdowns.

Along with Louisiana Tech and West Virginia, Chappelle had offers from Houston, Southern Mississippi, Hawaii and Middle Tennessee.
