Then there’s the plethora of defensive ends in 2014, including commitment Derick Roberson, which the Longhorns have to think about.
If Texas does decide to go after a 2013 defensive end, however, then Kewan Alfred (Beaumont, Texas/Trinity Valley Community College) could be a name to remember.
HornsNation caught up with Alfred (6-foot-3, 245 pounds) to discuss the Longhorns and various other topics surrounding his recruitment:
HornsNation: Who are you interested in right now?
Kewan Alfred: I’m interested in all of them, actually. I have a whole bunch of schools that are looking at me and some offers to. Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Old Dominion, Ole Miss, Lamar, UNLV, Utah State. I have a lot of schools showing me love. I just have to see what’s going on with the process.
HN: Who is coming after you the hardest right now?
Alfred: Texas is coming after me a little bit. Texas Tech is coming after me. I don’t have a favorite right now because I want to see what my options are. I just want to take everything slow and see what school is going to offer me. I know Kansas and Kansas State were on me for a bit.
HN: When is the last time you heard from the Longhorns?
Alfred: I talked to Coach [Oscar] Giles a couple of weeks back. He was just checking with me. They are showing a lot of interest, nothing really spectacular. But as for being a fan, whew, I have been a fan all my life. I am still a fan of Texas but I like all schools now. But I was a huge fan of Texas.
HN: Did Texas give you a sense that it might offer you at some point?
Alfred: Honestly I think they are kind of waiting to see what happens because I think they have somebody that is supposed to be coming back but I don’t know for sure. I am just trying to go step by step with Texas, and they are the same way with me.
HN: Safe to say that an offer from Texas would do a lot for you?
Alfred: It would, it would. To get that offer and just to think about how I use to dream about going to Texas would be very big to me, but at the same time I have to think about other places. But that would be very, very big for me.
HN: What are you looking for in a college?
Alfred: It’s really all of it. I want to have a good feel for the coaches, the environment, the whole nine yards. Also, another big thing about it, not only my education but I want to get to the league. That is my dream and my goal and I am going to do whatever it takes to get there. I want to make sure that wherever I am at is going to do what it takes to get me there as well.
HN: You haven’t been able to visit any colleges this season because of your season. But now that it is over where might you visit?
Alfred: I would like to visit Texas, Ole Miss, Louisiana-Tech and Kansas State. There is something about the way they play. I want to visit Kansas State as well.
HN: What makes you a defensive end that these colleges want?
Alfred: Honestly, and when I tell people this they start to laugh because it is kind of funny, but I play very vicious and whatever I’ve done on the field when I come off it, I don’t want to be able to move. I put myself in the mindset that when the quarterback has the ball, it’s my mom. I have to beat this dude in front of me to go get my mom. I will do whatever I can to go get my mom.
HN: Is that passion there because you want to get to the league so bad?
Alfred: It will never die down. Just this past weekend my dad, who is a pastor, came up to me and asked me if I got a million dollars a day, would I still play football. And I told him yes and without a doubt. I will play until I can’t play anymore.
