ESPN 300 DB Parker talks potential visits
By Damon Sayles
The Backyard Bowl, the game pitting Oklahoma high school football powers Jenks and Tulsa Union, is one of the biggest football attractions of the Sooner State -- on any level. More than 19,000 fans were in attendance Friday to watch the two teams play at the University of Tulsa's Chapman Stadium.
ESPN 300 safety Steven Parker (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) did his part to help his team beat Union, 20-16. In addition to offering his normal defensive back duties, Parker also finished the game with four catches for 89 yards, including a 47-yard reception early in the game.
Parker showed his versatility in the win, and that versatility is going to make one college program very happy next season.
For which school? That’s for Parker to announce -- at a later date.
"It's kind of a secret what I'm doing right now," said Parker, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound, four-star athlete who is ranked No. 237 in the ESPN 300 and No. 5 among 2014 players in the state of Oklahoma.
Parker said Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas, Ohio State and Michigan are among the schools high on his list. He also said he has two visits planned around January -- but not officially set -- to Ohio State and Michigan.
"My first goal is for our team to excel and get a state championship. I'm going to keep working hard," Parker said. "I'll know something after I get my official visits done and make sure I get to a couple of the other schools and see what they're about."
Parker said he is hearing most from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, but the other schools are very much alive in the recruiting race. While all of the schools are intriguing, Parker said he has thought about committing to Oklahoma State and ultimately signing with his high school teammate, three-star safety Dylan Harding.
"It would be really cool. I mean, we talk about it all the time," Parker said of him and Harding teaming up in college. "It's something we've thought about, but it's also something where I've thought of doing something different.
"I'm looking for a place where I can get out early and get some good playing time. I want a good relationship with the coaches. Any coach can leave at any time, but as long as they're there for a little bit, I'll be all right."
