Prosper ATH talks jr. days, Team USA

By Damon Sayles

Chase Dawkins (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) is working each day as the heir apparent for his high school football team. Elite 11 finalist Davis Webb now is preparing to play for Texas Tech, and Dawkins, listed as an athlete, is expected to take over the reins.

Dawkins visited SMU last week for a junior day, and the 6-foot, 170-pound athlete traveled Saturday to Denton, Texas, for North Texas’ junior day. He’s being recruited to North Texas by defensive coordinator John Skladany.

“It went really great. They have a nice campus and a new field,” Dawkins said of North Texas. “It was pretty cool just to go around UNT. It was a good experience.

“I talked with Coach Skladany, and he said they’re looking at me as an athlete. I’ll play quarterback in high school, but I’ll play anywhere at the next level.”

Rice, Tulsa, Utah and Arizona are also eyeing Dawkins. He played quarterback for the Team USA Under-18 squad at the International Bowl this month and helped the Americans beat Canada, 29-14. It was an experience he said he’ll always treasure.

“Just to wear USA across your chest,” Dawkins said, “what an unbelievable feeling.”

Dawkins saw reserve time at quarterback for Prosper, completing 70 percent of his passes and throwing for 257 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 161 yards and two scores.

Dawkins will replace a quarterback who tallied more than 3,200 total yards and 35 passing and rushing touchdowns combined. It’s a challenge he said he’s up for.

“I’m excited about the chance,” he said. “I’m ready to show what I can do.”
