2014 DE Peyton Newell gets 25th offer
By Damon Sayles
Big 12 offers seem to come at milestone moments for 2014 defensive end Peyton Newell (Hiawatha, Kan./Hiawatha)
His first offer came in April of his sophomore year from TCU. Offer No. 25 came Monday night, as the Oklahoma Sooners extended a scholarship offer to Newell. Eight of Newell’s offers are from Big 12 programs.
While all of the offers put a smile on his face, Newell admitted there was something a little extra about learning of Oklahoma’s interest.
“There’s a lot of tradition there,” Newell said. “I went down my freshman year for a camp, and I really liked the coaching staff. I was also impressed with the facilities.
“It was definitely exciting; I’m glad I got [the offer]. Oklahoma’s a big school. It’s not just one of those other schools that offer. It’s a big deal.”
Recruited by defensive ends coach Bobby Jack Wright, Newell is a 6-foot-3, 270-pound bulldozer with deceptive speed. He has been offered by UCLA, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and South Carolina, in addition to Big 12 schools TCU, Baylor, Kansas State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and West Virginia.
If Oklahoma is the last school to offer Newell, he said he’d be beyond happy with the process. But it's certainly not likely that Newell is finished hearing offers.
“I never dreamed of this, not even when TCU was my first [offer],” he said. “This is definitely a very humbling experience. I’m glad I get to be a part of it.”
Newell has been to junior days at Nebraska and South Carolina, and he’s going to visit Kansas this weekend for the Jayhawks’ junior day.
