2014 safety Bonney on Texas junior day

By Sam Khan Jr.

Houston Lamar safety John Bonney's trip to Texas for its first junior day of the year started out well.

Shortly upon his arrival, the 2014 prospect was pulled to the side and taken into coach Mack Brown's office. He sat there and talked with Brown, defensive backs coach Duane Akina and defensive ends coach Oscar Giles, who recruits Bonney's area, and was told that the Longhorns were officially extending him an offer.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Bonney, who had a dozen offers coming into Texas' junior day, was excited about it, as were his parents.

John Bonney received an offer from Texas at its first junior day of the year.
"I feel pretty good," Bonney said. "My parents were really excited about it; my mom and my dad were. It was a pretty good day."

Akina had a chance to see Bonney play during the Texas Class 5A Division I state semifinals when Lamar defeated San Antonio O'Connor. That day, Bonney held his assigned receiver without a catch and the Longhorns have been interested ever since.

"He talked to me [on Sunday] and he's real excited about me," Bonney said. "That was great for him to be at that game. He was talking about that and that I really fit into his scheme and everything. Getting a chance to talk to him is great."

Bonney enjoyed his visit, getting to see the campus and the football facilities.

"There's a lot of money put into these facilities," Bonney said. "They're adding even more to the stadium and all that. Just getting a chance to see the facilities blew my mind."

Bonney said he has been a Texas fan since he was a child and has been to many games in Austin over the years. Included among Bonney's 13 offers are Auburn, Baylor, LSU, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and UCLA. He plans to visit more campuses before closing in on a decision.

"I'm going to go to some spring practices of the schools that I really like that I'm interested in and see their spring practices," Bonney said. "One of the schools that I'm going to try to go see during spring practice is Ohio State. I've been in contact with their coaches and they're really excited about me. So I'm going to go to theirs, Northwestern's, Auburn's. I might go to spring practice at UCLA as well. I'll always make trips to Baylor and Texas."

He plans to make a decision before his senior season, perhaps this summer.

"Definitely before the season starts, but maybe before the summer or somewhere in there -- that's what we're trying to see about," Bonney said. "After I see some more places, I'll definitely get down to it and commit somewhere."
