Gaius Vaenuku (Euless, Texas/Trinity) claims offers from both Oklahoma and Notre Dame, and on Saturday, the 6-foot-6, 270-pound defensive end had a chance to get a solid glance at both programs.
Vaenuku was among the record-setting 86,031 crowd in attendance at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to witness Notre Dame’s 30-13 win against Oklahoma. The overall atmosphere of the stadium was one left him with lots of memories.
“I was supposed to go to the [Texas] A&M game last week, and I heard that was crazy, but I’ve never seen a crowd that crazy,” Vaenuku said of the Norman, Okla., experience. “They all had different chants, and the stadium seats were so close together. Everybody there was really into it.”
Vaenuku admittedly didn’t have a horse in the race, so to speak, but he saw positives from both teams, particularly since the game was tied at 13 with roughly six minutes left to play. It was the second trip to Oklahoma for Vaenuku, who also has other offers from programs such as Arizona, Arizona State, Florida, Kansas State, Michigan, UCLA and Oklahoma State, among others.
After watching the Sooners’ defense, particularly in the final minutes, Vaenuku simply said, “I think I could help them out.” He has said on several occasions that he has a high interest in Oklahoma. Vaenuku added that Notre Dame’s swarming, business-like defense reminded him of what he sees at Trinity.
“Overall, I just thought it was a pretty good game,” Vaenuku said. “I’m still pretty much wide open. I’m going to watch until after the season to make my decision. I want to take some more officials.”
Vaenuku said he doesn’t have any official visits set up, but he wants to take one to Oklahoma, as well as USC. The Trojans, however, have yet to offer.
