Wazzu commit Ayers keeping open mind

9/20/2012

Three-star athlete DeMarcus Ayers (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster) committed to Washington State in June, and while he is still solid with his pledge, he is interested in potentially taking a couple of official visits.

Ayers has offers from West Virginia, Illinois, Arizona State, Wake Forest and several other schools. While he only has a Washington State official visit set up, he said on Wednesday he wouldn’t be close-minded to setting up a visit to one of the 17 other schools that have offered.

Ayers, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound quarterback/receiver for Lancaster, will take an official to Washington State the weekend of Oct. 13 to watch the Cougars play Cal. Ayers, recruited by inside receivers coach Eric Morris, said the visit will tell a lot about what he’s looking for in a winning program.

“I’m just looking to see how [head coach] Mike Leach operates in game-time situations,” Ayers said. “I want to get there and meet some people who play my position. [Four-star quarterback commit] Tyler Bruggman is supposed to be there, and I think [Washington commit/Lancaster teammate] Daeshon Hall is going to make the trip, too. I just want to get a feel for it to see what it’ll be like for four years.”

Recruited as a receiver, Ayers said there has been discussion of him playing in the secondary, as well. As a quarterback for Lancaster, Ayers has rushed 25 times for 301 yards – a 12-yard average – and five touchdowns. He’s also thrown for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Lancaster (3-0) is ranked No. 5 in the state among Class 4A teams.
