Uncommitted RB Kenneth Burks on fire

9/16/2012

Running back Kenneth Burks (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield) plays every game as if it’s his own personal audition. This year, he’s yet to disappoint in three auditions.

Burks has rushed for 674 yards and eight touchdowns in three games, and he’s averaging nearly eight yards per carry. His latest outing was his best of the year, as he rushed 26 times for 219 yards and four touchdowns in a 63-22 rout against Mansfield school district rival Mansfield Summit on Friday. All four touchdowns were recorded in the first 20 minutes of the game.

“I was just trying to go out and play hard against an archrival,” said Burks, a 5-foot-8, 185-pound running back. “I want to go out with a memory.”

Burks opened the season by rushing 32 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns against Arlington (Texas) Bowie on Aug. 31. He followed that performance with a 27-rush, 277-yard, two-touchdown game the next week against Keller (Texas).

Burks is coming off a junior season when he rushed for 1,885 yards and 23 touchdowns. Still, the elusive back continues to work for his first FBS offer. Burks’ lone offer is from Lincoln (Mo.) University, a Division II school, which he picked up two weeks ago.

Burks is looking to soon join teammates George Baltimore (TCU commit), Chad Whitener (Cal), Austin Davis (Duke) and Zachary Crabtree (Oklahoma State) in discussions among FBS commits. Burks received early interest from Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, and he’s hoping that an FBS offer is in the immediate future.

“I’m averaging more than 200 [rushing] yards a game,” he said. “I’m just hoping the BCS colleges are taking notice. I want them to say that this kid can play, despite being 5-8.”
