2013 center Darius James Interview

RecruitingNation's Damon Sayles talks with Darius James (Killeen, Tex./Harker Heights), the top center in the ESPN 150 about what the Longhorn commit is looking forward to at Texas and his final season of high school football.

Under Armour All-American Darius James (Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights) is football recruiting’s No. 1 center in the country. This past weekend, he was aiming to be AAU basketball’s No. 1 center.

The Texas commit was spotted in Bryan, Texas, competing in an AAU tournament with ATX, a team of central Texas basketball players from the 2013 and 2014 classes. James doesn’t have plans of playing basketball in college, but he said the summer workout regimen assists in him getting ready to play on the Longhorns’ offensive line.

“I’ve been playing [AAU] for forever, probably since fifth grade,” James said. “Basically, it makes you work harder and helps you get even more exposure. It helps me stay conditioned all the time. It’s really helped me with my footwork, and my change of direction is better.”

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound, four-star athlete committed to Texas on March 5. He is No. 17 in the ESPN 150 and chose the Longhorns over offers from Oklahoma, Baylor, LSU and several other programs.

James said he will continue playing basketball throughout the summer, simply because the AAU season enhances his football workout.

“I do all those drills in football,” James said, “but basketball makes those drills easier to work.”
