ESPNU 150 Watch List quarterback J.T. Barrett (Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider) is back in classes after a relaxing, yet productive spring break. Over the weekend, he had a chance to visit Baton Rouge, La., and take in the LSU campus experience.
Barrett, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior, said he enjoyed all that LSU had to offer, as he and his family left Baton Rouge with a lot of answers about the football program and the school’s academics. LSU is one of the 10 schools that have offered Barrett.
“I liked that the campus was nice all-around,” Barrett said. “The way they have things set up, academically and football-wise, you can see why they’re successful every year. With football, from what I saw, the inner workings of everything, it’s not surprising that they went to the national championship game this year. They do everything well.”
Barrett said it was his first trip to Baton Rouge, and he had the chance to tour the campus, walk to the infamous Tiger Stadium, watch a team scrimmage and meet with coaches and players. Barrett also had the opportunity to meet and speak with head coach Les Miles.
“He’s very well spoken,” Barrett said of Miles. “I felt like he was being very honest with me. He showed me around, and we sat in his office and talked for a while. It was nice.”
Barrett’s primary contact has been LSU quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe. In addition to LSU, Barrett has offers from Ohio State, Nebraska, Baylor, Arizona and others. Barrett has LSU high on his list primarily because of what he has heard from Kragthorpe.
“I was told from Coach Kragthorpe that I was the No. 1 QB they’re coming for,” Barrett said. “It shows that we’re doing something right here at Rider. It also tells me to keep on working to get better. There’s always room for improvement. I’ve done well, but I’ve got to keep on going forward.”
Barrett is coming off a 2011 season where he threw for 1,604 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 1,515 yards and seven touchdowns. He led Rider to the state-quarterfinal round of the Texas Class 4A Division I playoffs.
