Durham Smythe is done with his visits and ready to make a decision.
The Belton tight end told HornsNation he’s planning to announce his choice by the end of this week. After making a trip to Palo Alto this weekend, his choice is down to Texas or Stanford.
“I really enjoyed the trip,” Smythe said. “The campus was beautiful, the coaches were really fun to be around and I really enjoyed my experience overall.”
Smythe and his father returned from California on Saturday morning after spending two days at Stanford. The visit confirmed a lot of things they already knew, but it also made Smythe’s choice more difficult.
One highlights was the opportunity to chat with Coby Fleener, Stanford’s starting tight end who caught 10 touchdowns in the Cardinals’ pro-style offense last season.
“I got to meet Coby and talk to him a little while and talk about his experience. That was cool,” he said. “Like a lot of respectable athletes I’ve talked to so far, he told me to find a place that’s right for you.”
Smythe did catch up with Manny Diaz on Monday and told the Texas defensive coordinator he’s planning to announce his decision on Friday or Saturday.
As for which school holds the lead right now, Smythe said the two programs are “pretty close to each other.” He’s ready to weigh their pros and cons over the next few days with his father.
“It’s tough,” he said. “I’ve been impressed with both and there’s a very tough decision coming up, but it’s a good situation to be in. These are good tough decisions, and the feeling you can be successful at either place is good.”
