Offensive tackle Maurice Porter (Missouri City, Texas/Marshall) had a full weekend. It started outside Houston and concluded in Waco.
Saturday included Porter competing at the Nike Football SPARQ Combine at Woodforest Bank Stadium in the suburbs of Houston. He was one of only 12 of the 984 participants in attendance to record a toss of 40 feet or better in the kneeling power ball.
“I got a good experience from it,” Porter said. “I thought it was a good turnout. I ran my second [40-yard dash], and I did better than what I thought.”
The next day, the 6-foot-5, 285-pound junior made a trip to Baylor – the first school to offer him – for the Bears’ junior day. Baylor offered Porter about three weeks ago. Since then, Porter, who is being recruited to Baylor by inside receivers coach Kendal Briles, has received offers from Colorado and West Virginia.
Porter said Sunday’s trip was his first to Waco, Texas, and the Baylor campus. He’s only been in Texas since May, when his family moved from Gary, Ind.
“It’s a big campus. I like the academics side of it,” Porter said. “I like the facilities. So far, everything’s been good with the recruiting process. Some of the colleges looking at me, I wasn’t expecting them to look at me.”
In addition to the offers, Porter has received interest from Texas Tech, Kansas State and a few other schools. He has a trip to Texas Tech planned for March 24.
