Texas Tech adds another WR

5/8/2013

Texas Tech is getting a “Scooter.”

The Red Raiders picked up commitment No. 11 on Tuesday when wide receiver Byron "Scooter" Daniels (San Antonio/Madison) picked Texas Tech over offers from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

“It feels good,” said Daniels, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound receiver. “It actually feels like a weight’s lifted off.”

Daniels was recruited by running backs coach Mike Jinks, who was the head coach at Cibolo (Texas) Steele High School in the greater San Antonio area before moving on to Texas Tech, and he saw the kind of athlete Daniels was on a loaded Madison ball club.

“I think he was a big impact,” Daniels said of Jinks. “With him seeing me play my sophomore year, and even when I first came to Madison, he was complimenting my game. He was always telling me to keep working hard.”

Daniels is expected to play both slot receiver and outside receiver for the Red Raiders. As a junior, Daniels caught 47 passes and scored 13 touchdowns. He has caught 94 passes in two varsity seasons.

Daniels committed to Texas Tech without taking a visit to the Lubbock campus. He said he is looking to plan a weekend visit soon. Daniels said the genuine nature of the coaching staff helped make his decision easy.

“They were straight up with me,” he said. “They really welcomed me like family.”

Daniels is the sixth receiver in Texas Tech’s 2014 class. With a pass-happy offense led by first-year coach Kliff Kingsbury, Daniels will have a chance for early playing time.

“I’m bringing a positive attitude,” Daniels said. “I want everyone to be ready for whatever.”
