High three-star offensive lineman Conner Grooms (Tyler, Texas/Robert E. Lee) recently has been on the unfortunate end of a recruiting reality that few like to talk about.
Two of Grooms’ top schools -- Kansas and Houston -- have had coaching changes, and it has left the 6-foot-4, 275-pound center at a loss for words. It also has made Grooms’ recruiting process go a little slower than what he would like.
“Kansas had its coach fired, and then Coach [Kevin] Sumlin leaves Houston for [Texas] A&M, so I’m not sure what they’re going to do,” Grooms said. “Everything is going kind of slow for me. I’m just waiting to see what happens.”
Grooms said he is wide open with his process. In addition to offers from Kansas and Houston, he also has offers from Louisiana Tech, Minnesota, UTSA and Memphis. Grooms is expected to line up at center in college.
One thing that has run across Grooms’ mind is whether or not Sumlin will express interest in him now that he’s at A&M. If he is able to pick up an offer from the Aggies, Grooms said that one -- because of proximity, tradition and the opportunity to play in the SEC -- would be difficult to turn away.
“They have a good team, but right now, I’m just letting things happen,” he said. “I’m a pretty calm, cool and collected guy, so I’m not real worried about it. I’m just kind of tired of being patient.”
Grooms had interest earlier in the season from Oklahoma State, Baylor, Nebraska, Rice and Louisiana-Monroe. He is ranked the 61st player in Texas and the 49th center in the country.
