Three-star ATH Morgan chooses Iowa

12/14/2011

PLANO, Texas -- For quite some time, Anthony Morgan (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian) has known privately about his college plans. Wednesday afternoon, Morgan made those private thoughts public.

In front of family and friends, Morgan verbally committed to Iowa during an off-campus press conference, choosing the Hawkeyes over Arizona, Stanford, Virginia and Utah State. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound, three-star athlete played safety and saw partial time at outside linebacker for Prestonwood, but he was recruited by Iowa to play safety.

“I’ve known it was going to be Iowa since my junior year,” Morgan said. “I just kept on praying about it and talked to my parents. When I went on my visit and saw the players and coaches getting along, it really showed me a family atmosphere. It was great to see.”

Morgan had 15 offers on the table -- including Rice, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Indiana and Northwestern -- and Oklahoma and Texas Tech had expressed interest in him. Morgan was recruited by receivers/tight ends coach Erik Campbell and secondary coach Phil Parker. During his official visit in October, Morgan had a chance to hang out with receiver Jacob Hillyer.

“He’s a nice guy. He grew up around San Antonio, so it was good to hang with someone from Texas,” Morgan said. “He showed me around town and all the facilities. I look forward to working with him.”

Morgan added that he’s built a decent relationship with Campbell and Parker. Both have been in town on in-home visits, and the three have connected. Morgan said he’s excited about the challenge of playing in the Big Ten, as well as competing for a starting spot as a freshman.

“I know I have to work hard to be able to play with these guys,” he said, “but I’m going in knowing I’m going to do my best. There are some great coaches there, and I don’t want to disappoint them.”
