Junior college defensive back Martez Shabazz (Athens, Texas/Trinity Valley Community College) held Baylor and Minnesota in the same light during his recruiting process. He thoroughly enjoyed both schools on official visits, and he felt he couldn’t go wrong with either choice.
Shabazz originally chose Baylor in late November, but because of academic complications, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound sophomore cornerback has decided to back out of his commitment to Baylor and choose Minnesota.
Shabazz, recruited by secondary coach Jay Sawvel, visited Minnesota the weekend of Nov. 11 and strongly considered the Golden Gophers until he visited Baylor the following weekend. Shabazz said Baylor wanted him to retake a course by way of a mini-mester, but he wasn’t able to accommodate financially.
