Per his high school coach, linebacker Garrett Dolan (Mont Belvieu, Texas/Barbers Hill) has verbally committed to Houston Baptist.
Barbers Hill coach Ronnie Gage said Dolan committed to the Huskies last week. Dolan, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker, chose HBU over interest from Stephen F. Austin and additional interest from NCAA Division II schools.
Dolan, a three-year letterwinner and two-year starter for Barbers started out as an outside linebacker but moved to inside linebacker during the season. He finished his senior year with 92 tackles, eight sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
“They’re getting a good player, a kid who’s continuing to get better and better,” Gage said of Dolan, an all-district player. “No. 1, he has a passion for the game. He works during the season and during the offseason. He’s a big, strong, physical kid who’s going to get better because he wants to.”
Gage said Dolan was recruited by both offensive line coach Drew O’Daniel and defensive line coach Burl Jordan. Houston Baptist is a start-up program that will kick off its inaugural season in the fall, which could mean lots of playing time early.
“It’s a new school, and it’s close to home,” Gage said. “They kind of just fell in love with each other. They got on him during the middle of the season, and they stayed on him.”
Of Dolan’s 92 tackles, 35 were solo and 14 were tackles for a loss.
