Fresh off a productive trip to Ohio State, junior college outside linebacker Martrell Spaight (Coffeyville, Kan./Coffeyville Community College) is preparing for an official visit to Rutgers on Wednesday.
He’s only hoping the Rutgers trip will be just as memorable as the trip to Columbus, Ohio, was. Spaight was on hand to watch the Buckeyes defeat Michigan, 26-21, and finish the regular season 12-0. He was one of 105,899 in attendance.
“It was a great trip. I enjoyed the Division I atmosphere,” said Spaight, the reigning Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year. “I’m getting a feel for the speed [of the game] and things like that.”
A 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker, Spaight had freshman linebacker Joshua Perry as a player host. He also had a chance to touch base with the Buckeyes coaches, including his primary contact, defensive coordinator Luke Fickell.
“What stood out to me the most would be the tradition behind the school and how much of a family the team is,” Spaight said. “I mean, there’s no selfishness. Everyone is playing as a unit. [Interest] is pretty high at the moment. I like the school and what it’s about.”
The Buckeyes have held off on offering Spaight for the time being, as they are waiting for his final grades, Spaight said. Spaight recorded 130 tackles, seven sacks, three pass breakups and a blocked kick in nine games for Coffeyville, which placed third in the Jayhawk Conference.
Wednesday’s Rutgers visit will be Spaight’s third official of the year. He visited Arkansas State the weekend of Sept. 29.
