Outside linebacker Charles Woods (Kilgore, Texas/Kilgore College) puts up numbers that often times are only seen in video games.
Take Woods’ game against Tyler (Texas) Junior College three weeks ago. In a 45-24 win, Woods recorded 19 tackles and had two interceptions, one of which he returned 71 yards for a touchdown. As a 5-foot-11, 200-pound linebacker, he showed throughout his sophomore season -- in one of the most respected junior college conferences in the country -- that he is a playmaker.
“Last year, I had 18 tackles, a blocked field goal and two sacks in a game,” Woods said, “but I think [the Tyler game] was the best game I’ve ever played so far. We’ve still got a bowl game to go, so that’s why I say it’s the best so far.”
Kilgore is 8-2 and finished No. 11 in the final NJCAA poll. For the year, Woods finished with 128 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks, three fumble recoveries, five forced fumbles and five pass breakups. He also had two defensive touchdowns, returning an interception and a fumble recovery for a score.
With all this, Woods still patiently awaits his first FBS offer. He has an offer from Division II Lincoln (Mo.) and interest from TCU, UTSA, Angelo State and Lamar.
Woods, a linebacker who can play safety at the next level, is hoping his final game in a Kilgore uniform can assist in him pulling that big offer. The crazy stats he's been putting up on defense wouldn't hurt his case.
“Whoever comes and has the best offer, that’s where I’ll go,” Woods said. “I don’t care less who it is, as long as it benefits me the right way.”
