Ask Van (Texas) High School head coach Jared Moffatt about defensive tackle Syd Moore, and the word “athlete” comes up multiple times. At 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, Moore does what many his size can’t.
For example, there aren’t many high school defensive tackles on any level -- let alone the Texas Class 3A level -- that can run the 40-yard dash in less than five seconds. Moore has been clocked in 4.82 seconds. Additionally, few defensive tackles double as running backs. Along with accounting for 70 tackles, a sack and a pass breakup on defense, Moore’s also rushed 29 times for 159 yards and four touchdowns as a power back.
“If we ran the Power-I, he’d rush for 2,000 yards this year,” Moffatt said of Moore, who is one of the gems in east Texas recruiting. Moore currently has offers from SMU, Louisiana-Monroe and Texas State, but he also has received interest from TCU, Texas Tech and several other programs.
