Defensive tackle Charles Walker (Garland, Texas/South Garland) is one of the many college football recruiting prospects making the trip to the Cotton Bowl for Saturday’s Texas-Oklahoma showdown.
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound tackle claims an offer from Oklahoma and has received some interest from Texas. Like most of the uncommitted players there, he’s hoping for Saturday to offer an idea of what he wants in a winning program.
“I’m ready to see them get after it,” Walker said. “I want to see how the offenses execute and if the defenses can be on lockdown.”
Walker, who can play either tackle or end, claims offers from Oklahoma, North Texas, Texas State, Houston and New Mexico State. He said Oklahoma and Texas State are classified as early front-runners, but an offer from some of the FBS programs showing interest -- such as Texas, Texas Tech, LSU, Iowa, Oregon or Arkansas -- could sway his recruiting thoughts.
Walker said the winning school will be a place that provides a good campus environment, features a respectable football program and has a sound academic background. He wants to major in business.
“Education is the first thing I’m looking for and how great it is at the school,” Walker said, “but really, I’m looking for a second home. I want to be at a place where I’m most comfortable. No matter how far it is, I want to be around some good people.”
Walker has been a key to South Garland’s program this season, and he has managed to steer clear of the injury bug. A fractured leg as a sophomore and a concussion as a junior slowed him down, but he has managed to bounce back.
