Commitment No. 18 is in for SMU, as multipurpose athlete J’Marcus Rhodes (Orange, Texas/West Orange-Stark) said he gave his verbal pledge on Sunday.
Rhodes, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound, two-way starter with 4.52-second speed in the 40-yard dash, chose SMU over FCS offers from Lamar, McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin. Rhodes also picked up some early interest from Baylor and Iowa State.
“It’s a great relief, a lot of weight off my shoulders,” Rhodes said. “I know my mom’s very proud of me. She knows deep down inside that college is expensive, and this will pay for my tuition. It’s a big relief.”
The Mustangs picked up a player who wears multiple hats for WOS. Rhodes lines up at wide receiver, cornerback and punter. He also is capable of being a reliable returner on special teams. Rhodes is a part of a team that is 6-0 this season and plays for a defense that has pitched four shutouts.
Rhodes has a team-leading 16 receptions for 292 yards and six touchdowns as a receiver, but he said he was recruited most likely to play in the SMU secondary. Associate head coach Dan Marrison and secondary coach Derrick Odum were Rhodes’ primary recruiting contacts.
“I really like what SMU is all about,” Rhodes said. “The location is good; I’ve got a lot of family that way. I also like the educational side. I want to major in forensic science, and I think they have a good department over here. Hearing my mom talk about it, I’ve always known that education comes first.”
