There were many who figured once three-star tight end Christian Morgan (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian) decommitted from Florida State, Ole Miss would be a strong candidate to land him.
Three days after dumping the Seminoles, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end gave the Rebels his verbal pledge on an unofficial visit to Oxford, Miss.
“I have decided to commit to THE University of Mississippi!” Morgan tweeted. “It has been a long journey, but God has guided me the whole way. #RebelNation”
Morgan took an official visit to Ole Miss last month and watched the Rebels play Texas. It drew questions when Ole Miss -- and not Florida State -- was his first official visit. Morgan said the overall atmosphere of the campus and the players and coaching staff were major pros in his decision.
“It was everything about it,” Morgan said. “I just felt at home there. I really trust [head] Coach [Hugh] Freeze, as well as [area recruiter] Coach [Tom] Allen and [tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator] Coach [Maurice] Harris.”
Morgan chose Ole Miss over Baylor and Arkansas. He is hoping his younger sister Ashley will join him soon. Ashley, a standout outside hitter for Prestonwood’s volleyball team, also made the trip for an unofficial visit. She is being heavily recruited by the Rebels for volleyball.
“The opportunity to come and play with my sister here would be a special thing,” Morgan said. “It’s close enough to where I’m away from home but can still drive back and far enough to where we can make our own paths.”
Morgan has caught 15 passes for 199 yards and four touchdowns this season, and he leads Prestonwood in all three receiving categories. Ranked No. 12 among Y-tight ends nationally and No. 76 among players in Texas, Morgan became the 19th commitment of Ole Miss’ 2013 recruiting class. He is the second tight end of the class, joining three-star Evan Engram (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove).
