High two-star defensive end Alex Keith (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) confirmed that he has committed to Minnesota.
Keith, a 6-foot,-3, 236-pound defensive end with 4.6 speed in the 40-yard dash, chose Minnesota over offers from Northern Iowa and Missouri State. He also had interest from Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Kansas State.
Keith said he made an unofficial visit to the campus two weeks ago and will make an official visit the weekend of Dec. 9. Keith was recruited by assistant coach Brian Anderson, and he is projected to be a weakside defensive end for the Gophers.
“I liked the staff,” Keith said. “They were really friendly and made me feel at home in Minneapolis.”
Hickman coach Arnel Monroe said Keith and his parents have been impressed with the entire coaching staff, particularly coach Jerry Kill. Monroe said the Gophers will receive a player who has the potential to be an all-conference standout in the Big Ten.
“He’s an explosive, athletic kid who’s starting to come into his own,” Monroe said. “He’s put on 20 or 25 pounds and has made himself that much better. The bigger the stage, the better he plays. Minnesota’s getting a great character kid and a great ambassador for Coach Kill.”
Keith recorded 67 tackles, 12½ sacks, five caused fumbles and four fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He also saw time on offense as a wide receiver and tight end and had caught five touchdown passes this season.
