Three-star outside linebacker Nick Akins (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) was in Monroe, La., to watch Baylor’s 47-42 victory over Louisiana-Monroe -- and like most of the college football world, he was fascinated by how competitive ULM was against another larger BCS school.
Akins, who visited ULM unofficially, said the overall atmosphere was one he could get used to. The 6-foot, 210-pound linebacker said ULM is a school he will strongly consider as he continues to research college programs.
“It was crazy out there,” Akins said of the Malone Stadium crowd, which turned out a record attendance of 31,175. “It was sold out, and they had a white-out. I thought it was fun out there. Even though they lost, the team still competed.
“They’re in the Sun Belt [Conference], and they’re competing against the Big 12. I wouldn’t mind going back to take an official.”
Akins, recruited by Warhawks safeties coach Adam Waugh, has offers from ULM, Colorado State, New Mexico State and UNLV. He also has attracted interest from Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Boise State, North Texas and Idaho.
